What is a Filling?
A filling is a restoration that’s used to fill in a decayed area of your tooth. It can be made of gold, silver, or composite resin. Fillings are strong and durable and can last for many years.
During your appointment, your dentist will first perform an oral exam to determine if you need a filling. If so, a freezing anesthetic will be applied. This numbs the area, so you will not feel any pain. Then, the dentist will remove the decayed material from your tooth using special tools. Your tooth will then be shaped and prepared for the filling material. The dentist will then place the filling in your tooth and seal it with a special dental cement.
Fillings for Cavities
Not all cavities need fillings, especially if they are small. This varies from person to person and is determined by the dentist.
My Filling Fell Out…
Fillings eventually fall out after serving their time. If your filling comes out, don’t leave it for long, as leaving your tooth exposed could worsen the cavity and aggravate sensitivity. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need a refill.
