Wisdom Teeth Extractions
For most people, wisdom teeth cause crowding in the mouth once they have erupted. In these cases, the best thing to do is extract the wisdom teeth.
What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that erupt on the top and bottom of the jaw. Most will see these teeth come in between the ages of 17 and 25. We have a special type of x-ray called a Panorex that can spot wisdom teeth. Some people don’t experience any symptoms or problems with their wisdom teeth. Others may experience pain, swelling, or trouble chewing food. These symptoms may happen when the wisdom tooth is impacted, or that the tooth is growing in at a strange angle in relation to the other teeth.
When to Remove Wisdom Teeth
Your dentist will be able to determine for you whether an extraction is necessary or not, based on your oral exam and x-rays. If your wisdom teeth are growing in straight and are not crowding the other teeth, keep up with your good oral hygiene. For those who are not so lucky, the following are reasons to have them removed:
- Impacted, or partial eruption of wisdom teeth
- Crowding other teeth
- Growing in at odd angles
- Gum infection due to food particles
- Pain from sinuses or lower jaw
- Orthodontic treatment
- Irreparable cavities on wisdom teeth
